Top Ten Tips on How to Keep Cool in a Heatwave

  1. Keep your blinds pulled down all day and consider only opening your windows when it gets cooler later in the day.
  2. Wash in cool but not cold water, and keep some handy around to splash yourself and your little ones with (always keeping an eye on them around water of course).
  3. Wet tea towels or freeze bottles of water to place in front of fans.
  4. Drink lots and lots – try to avoid caffeine and sugary drinks.
  5. Wear lightweight, loose clothing, and a hat and sunglasses.
  6. Try to avoid being in the sun in the hottest hours of the day (generally 11-3).  Remember, babies should not be in the sun at all for at least their first 6 months.
  7. Use a high factor sunscreen and always check the UVA/B scale on the back of the bottle.
  8. Try to avoid cooking during the day (unless it’s a BBQ outside of course!) – check out our Recipes Page for salad and refreshing drinks recipes.
  9. Hot air rises, so keep as low to the floor as possible, or on the bottom floor of your house.
  10. If all else fails, daydream about snow and ice! Research has shown that this can actually help to lower your body temperature!
